While I’m taking a small break from my novel chapters, which I’m on chapter 13. I’m almost finished with the short story, In the Hour of Humanity. Yes. Now I am at 3382 words. And I didn’t expect it to go this far. To sketch a whole other storyline out, different from what I originally had. The story has spun into a whole other something. And writing this story is quite fun.
Writing the short story in parts, I write the story of Zios , an old mortal man who was once a wolf, now bound to a wheel chair. Using the book end frame technique starting with Zios’ s present, I careen into his past, beginning at the very hour of his humanity. And I follow him through his mortal journey as he struggles with maintaining his werewolf beast and visions he develops when he touches any mortal or object.
I know what you’re thinking . We don’t want to see or read a characters backstory. We want to see them in the present. This is sloppy writing. Terrible way to start a story. But I don’t believe that’s true because there is a short story /novel connection.
His story does not end there in his past . The end of the short story will tie in nicely to the work in progress novel up to its present where the novel story begins. There will be a lot of explanations and references to different places and people who will be mentioned and seen in the novel. And I might add an appearance by a young Sirena, so the reader can know and see how connected the two stories are to each other. It will make the reader understand during the blue hour better.
Even though I create new scenes for most of the parts, creating new characters in the process, I also use a lot of deleted scenes from old drafts that I have written before. These scenes are from mostly my work in progress novel that I cannot use within my 2nd draft because I sort of took the character out of my 1st draft. But he will make a small appearance in my 2nd draft.
Even though I’m not finished with the short story I have most of it finished but all of it outlined. So what I want to accomplish with the short story pieces is for it to be more of a companion or addition to the work in progress novels. The short stories will never be something that takes away from the main stories. They will all be connected in some way.
