I’m writing another tv show/ book review summary and this time it’s about an actual werewolf show. The tv show entitled Bitten is based on the Otherworld series books by Kelly Armstrong about not only werewolves but witches and vampires as well.
This series was right up my ally because I’m writing about werewolves but I avoided the book series for years because in 2008 I started working on my werewolf novel series and I did not want to be influenced by her characters and world while writing mine.
But after all these years as I have my story world figured out and established being on my 2nd draft I decided to take the chance to delve into Armstrong’s Otherworld Series.
I have not yet read the first book however it is on my book list to purchase and I have started to look at the tv series. From my research on the series like most tv adaptations of books the show is said to be widely different from the book series .
So now on the 3rd season I’m eager to get ready to read the books after its completed.
The tv shows main character as is in the 1st book is Elena Michaels and she as we find out through the first season has been a werewolf for 4 years . She was bitten by her former fiancé/boyfriend Clay who turned her for I think selfish reasons and at the start of the season we see her not with him due to her I guess running away from him and the rest of the pack. The show gives the reason is because she killed someone and so she wants to lead a normal human life. But a mysterious line of murders brings her back to the pack.
And so what do I think about this so far as I am not finished with the tv series? Well now in the 3rd and last season I feel like the show is coming full circle . Everything that surrounded Elena, the main character, at the beginning of the series of how she felt and what she went through is making a lot of sense now in the third season. And I kind of like it.
The 2nd season brought the arrival of witches . I like a good witch tale. However I did not like this one within this tv series . It happened so abruptly and the story of the witches within the series compared to the werewolves were all over the place. I felt like it intruded on the werewolf tale itself . The main witch storyline didn’t make since and then it just ended . Maybe if they introduced the witches within the first season?
My favorites points within the series was :
I liked how the story itself concentrated on the pack and the structure of the werewolf packs . (it concentrated on two structured werewolf types ; pack members and mutts)
I like their wolf transformations and how they fully turned into a wolf.
I like that they were trained in human form for combat and the fights seemed fairly reasonable for a werewolf in its human form.
My most disappointed points in the series:
I didn’t like how any and all humans were killed if they knew the secret of the werewolves
I didn’t like how the werewolf fathers had to steal their new born male child away from the mother or either kill them.
My most confused moments :
Elena’s storyline that included that she was the only female werewolf in the whole world. None of the woman who were bitten before Elena never survived .
Season 3 clears my confusion up about that storyline however I feel like the characters don’t take notice that the reason why she changed into a werewolf when first bitten by Clay is because she was born by a werewolf father but then bitten. That confuses me more . Because now woman can actually be a part of the pack and not have to be killed . Idk maybe they just don’t want to take that risk of biting the woman who are born from the werewolves . It would clear up a lot of sad moments though .
Killing humans who find out aboutwerewolves.
Okay I kind of understand why some humans might be killed because they might use the secret against the werewolves . However, they didn’t even give humans a chance to decide whether or not they were on their side before killing them. An example of that would be Jeremy the alpha of Elena’s pack wanting to kill Elena when she was human because he thought she saw him change from the werewolf .
Another example is when Jeremy killed Karen Morgan the former shieriff of Bear Valley . He was going to let her go but then she started to talk about what she saw which was Elena ‘s brother turning into a werewolf . However Jeremy never gave her a chance to even say she would keep the secret of the werewolves. Upon viewing that episode I believe she would have kept their secret but at that moment she was just confounded with shock because she just found out that the world actually existed . Maybe if she was just given a couple of days to wrap her head around everything she saw. I mean she did say before she died that she was going to keep his secret of the werewolves. But it’s like he didn’t care and it was that moment I gave up on his character because I tried to like him but it was too hard.
I mean Elena showed herself to Phillip and he kept the secret until Jeremy’s father ordered a kill on him .
And then Antonio changed in front of his wife. She knew what him and her son were and kept their secret for years . But the only reason why she survived the series is because Jeremy never found out .
I just felt the reasoning they gave for killing the humans who found out were kind of weak.
All and all it was a reasonable series and it has led me to delve deeper and actually read the books .

As you well know Little Red riding hood is by far one of the most famous fairytales their ever was about Werewolves . But no one really ever talks about or analysis the story in that aspect .You have the talking wolf that is by far in every way considered a werewolf. I know it’s an anamorphic animal but he literally stalks humans ie little red and devours the grandmother . An although there is no howling at a moon there are versions of Little red riding hood that delivers on werewolf mythologies and legends of the past.
Some being;
11 century version by a cathedral schoolmaster named Egbert of Liège
La finta nonna (The False Grandmother), written by Italo Calvino in the Italian Folktales collection
Le Petit Chaperon Rouge
With that being said I will be analyzing Little red riding hood in-depth in a later podcast episode. Because my work in progress novel During the Blue Hour has a lot of Big Bad Wolf & Little Red Riding Hood scares and Moments.
What’s your opinion about Little red riding hood really being about werewolves?
Do you have any big bad wolf moments in your novel?

Completed yet another scene for my 14th chapter in my 2nd draft . 2750 words, not all in one day though.
This scene features the main love interest Cristen’s POV where he has to struggle and come to terms with his mother lying to him about who Sirena really was and is in fact also a werewolf like them.
This scene is yet another confrontation with him and Adrian about who Sirena really is and what she means to the yearling pack at this point .
This scene does contain a flashback scene with Cristen interacting with both his parents before they were killed .
In the flashback scene it reveals that Cristen’s mother gave him Sirena’s father’s journal that tells who she is. But his mother tells him no matter what happens don’t ever read the book just give it to Sirena when the time comes. And she also has him believe that Sirena is just a human girl.
So this is why he as my character is seen struggling.
He is supposed to be an alpha but doesn’t know the truth to anything . And he is mad because his rival Adrian knows more about Sirena than he does himself.
And the thing is in my story is that he cannot be challenged as an alpha unless he is in the community of werewolves during their ritual bluffing ceremonies . So Adrian tries to make little small jabs at Cristen whenever he can get the opportunity to because Cristen knows that Adrian wants to be the alpha of the yearling pack.
So this is the point of where I’m at and at the end of the scene Cristen screams towards Adrian ,
” Until we get to Aquilum, don’t you dare challenge me again,” he said. Before Adrian or anyone could object Cristen picked up the book and raced out the door.
Adrian just spilled the info that Cristen is the one who killed Gabby in the mountains.
The next chapter will be back in Sirena’s POV . I’ll keep you updated on this next scene within chapter 14. I’m thinking about combining two scenes into one for that scene .

I was doing some more research on post-apocalyptic fiction. My current work in progress novel is in fact a post post apocalyptic novel about werewolves and how their world ends not once but twice. And so while researching I was curious about something.
You all know that Plato wrote about Atlantis, right?
Well if you didn’t know the lost city of Atlantis is always looked and thought upon as a myth. A legend. The city or continent with advanced civilization and technologies filled with abundance and prosperity that fell beneath the sea due to cataclysmic destruction because of a war .
So the thing that I was curious about was what if Plato was one of the first post-apocalyptic fiction writers? What if Atlantis was true and not a myth?
I know. I know. I’m far reaching but that’s what I do. Read on if you want to delve deeper with me and find out through Plato’s writings about Atlantis if he was in actuality one of the first post-apocalyptic fiction writers or actual historian of a real society.
Post-apocalyptic fiction can refer to any time after an apocalypse, either when things are a mess, or when order has finally been restored.
What is an apocalypse ?
An apocalypse is an uncovering, a disclosure or revelation of knowledge. But can sometimes be described as an catastrophic event.
Now let’s delve into Plato and whether he wrote about the apocalypse that refers to the events of Atlantis .
Plato was known as one of the most prolific Athenian philosophers of his time. Educated in both philosophy and poetry he followed the teaching of Socrates . He even founded his own school in the year 387.
He wrote a lot of literature called Dialogues . He wrote 36 to be exact. But it is said that his later dialogues are not in fact dialogues but explorations of different topics. We can assume at this point and time Plato decided to write fiction ? And venture into the area of post-apocalyptic writing?
WHAT YEAR DID HE WRITE ABOUT ATLANTIS?
He first wrote about Atlantis around the year 350 . So this is way before he founded his school. He wrote two dialogues about Atlantis entitled the Dialogues of Timaeus and Critias. He incorporates the myth of Atlantis with Greek gods .
*(Lets keep note of these 2 things)
Today writings about Greek gods would be considered fantasy fiction.
But in Plato’s day they were simply factual historical writings.
WHAT DOES HE WRITE ABOUT ATLANTIS ?
PLATO WRITES IN HIS DIALOGUE that Atlantis was an island founded by Poseidon and Cleito who divided into 10 sections or kingdoms and gave each section to have it ruled over by their children . There were abundant natural resources for the people of Atlantis to build their homes and live off of. It was literally a continent filled by mountains, sea, wealthy villages and meadows . Basically abundance all around .
He also describes how Atlantis was shaped and how long it took for the creation of Atlantis and how it began to flourish. But there were also laws the people had to abide by that were inscribed on the temples of the town and villages
These laws were as follows:
They were not to take up arms against one another.
They were all to come to the rescue if anyone in any of their cities attempted to overthrow the royal house;
like their ancestors, they were to deliberate in common about war and other matters, giving the supremacy to the descendants of Atlas.
And the king was not to have the power of life and death over any of his kinsmen unless he had the assent of the majority of all the ten kingdoms of Atlantis.
HOW DID THE DESTRUCTION OF ATLANTIS OCCUR?
So Plato also writes that the people abided by the laws for many generations and they wanted for nothing . Neither gold or money or other possessions. However somewhere along the way they changed and I guess humanity got the better of them and he describes in Crtias that Zeus came along and saw the people weren’t listening and made some kind of speech.
Plato wrote about what Zeus had said but the writings of what he said is apparently lost.
But if you take a look at the dialogues of Timaeus(25d) The destruction of Atlantis happened practically overnight. First there were violent earthquakes and floods. Then the people of the city simply disappeared into the earth and the city sank into the sea. Finally mud swept over the city making the waters unpassable as they were too shallow.
Plato writes in Critias (110d) Even though Atlantis was in fact destroyed there were still asteroids/comets that collided with the earth causing fire, thunder, earthquakes and floods after Atlantis destruction. There were survivors. Mountain people who knew the names of the people of Atlantis. However, they did not know many details of them or their virtues. But Despite this fact the people of the mountains survived and thrived .
SO DID PLATO ACTUALLY WRITE A UTOPIAN/DYSTOPIAN APOCALYPTIC DIALOGUE OR WAS IT FACT?
On the site LIBGUIDES Plato’s works are classified as a utopian and dystopian and he is labeled as one .
Plato himself got the mention of Atlantis from an Athenian statesman named Solon who ventured to Egypt and got the story from there . Solon was said to be the first to write a poem about Atlantis but then this is disputed and it is claimed that Plato is the originator of the Atlantis tale.
Well there are arguments and debates today whether Plato’s Dialogues about Atlantis were real or not. Some feel like The Atlantis story is clearly a parable of maybe an ideal city or society . A fiction based on some ancient political realities.
Some also think that his tale of Atlantis is about the explosive disappearance of an island might have been a reference to the eruption of Minoan Santorini. And also that Atlantis as a tale should be considered a myth.
There are many writers right after Plato who takes his work and turns the tale of Atlantis into a poem and other works of fiction
In 1627 Francis Bacon’s writes New Atlantis which is based off of Plato’s two Dialogues. This is the first instance where you can see a classification of where the Atlantis tale /myth falls into place. Francis work is thus considered a Utopian work in that time period .
WHAT IS UTOPIAN & DYSTOPIAN FICTION AND WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH THE APOCALYPSE FICTION ?
Utopian fiction is fiction that tells stories about perfect societies.
Dystopian fiction is the opposite. An imperfect or undesirable society.
Sometimes a written society can be ideal or horrific depending on how you go about writing it and this is the very reason why dystopian and utopian fiction is sometimes crossed over with post-apocalyptic fiction .
Moreover, utopian fiction and dystopian fiction are usually deemed as umbrella terms of post-apocalyptic and apocalyptic fiction. The only differences between the three would be the written plots.
In the case of Plato when he writes about Atlantis and finally its destruction
He goes from ideal society(utopian)
To a society that’s ravaged by both political, spiritual , moral upheaval. Simply put the downfall of Atlantis humanity . (dystopia)
He literally writes about it all and what happened after the destruction. Where did the people go ? How did they respond to the devastation of Atlantis? How did they rebuild? (post -apocalypse).
So to answer the question from my own observance and research
Was Plato a post-apocalyptic fiction writer? Yes. And also a fantasy writer? Yes
But that is only if you don’t consider his writings of Atlantis to be historical fact.
Remember I told you back then when the ancient philosophers wrote about the Gods they wrote them as being historical writings. So you decide.

Yesterday I had a poll open for which title to name my 14th chapter . The titles being three; A New Reality , Awoken Dreams, The yearling den.Only two people voted but those two votes went 50/50 with the two appealing titles ; A New Reality and The Yearling Den .
So this is what I did. The main chapter 14 is entitled A New Reality and the first scene in the chapter 14 will be entitled Inside the Yearling Den.
CHAPTER 14 SUMMARY
Sirena awakens insides the yearling cave to find Cristen and the rest of the pack arguing and discussing her. Cristen struggles to make a decision to tell Sirena who she really is. While Xavier and Mary devise another plan to capture Sirena .
Yesterday I was able to finish the first scene which came to 778 words .
And I went ahead and named it inside the yearling den because Sirena the main character literally wakes up in the yearling den in like a kind of hole within the cave that wolves in real life usually sleep in. The hole is large within the cave . In fact the cave itself has many large holes within. the walls of the cave that surround a large body cenote and waterfalls.
But within these shallow holes it is dark and so Sirena is basically laying on like a makeshift bed of sticks , twigs and rocks and she is in pain being wounded from the previous chapter but however she is also scared when she wakes up within this darken hole in the wall. Of course because she doesn’t know where she is .
She only sees these beings with red eyes who look like her. And she hears that they have healed her but it didn’t work. Scared she remembers what happened to her and Eli in the previous chapter 13 and she sees a crawl space and literally crawls out of it to go after him .
I wrote this scene like this because her new reality hasn’t kicked in yet and it won’t for the rest of the novel until maybe the end . But this chapter will basically be the start of where she finds out about her true werewolf existence.
The next chapter will be in Cristen’s POV . I’ll keep you updated on the next scene within chapter 14.

I haven’t wrote in three weeks because of being busy and life you know gets in the way of writing . But I am energized and solely ready to write again . With the writer’s block gone I’m heading into finishing up my chapters for this 2nd draft of my work in progress novel. Although I was hoping to finish the draft fully this year and start the editing publication steps. But I haven’t. Goals aren’t always accomplished of course . So since I did not accomplish my goals this year I’m going to push it into next year .
So where I’m at right now is I’m in the 13th chapter of my 2nd draft .
Soin the year 2022 I plan to not only finish this up but also start finishing up on the 2nd short story RED ENVY and maybe start a 3rd draft of my work In Progress but we will see what happens.
When trying to get your goals done in my opinion you have to prioritize which writing project is most important to you .
Your goals must matter to you as the writer.
I would say set deadlines for yourself. But when setting deadlines I always end up not meeting those deadlines. So instead create milestones that way you will be able to complete your writing goals without a time frame and will be able to finish what prioritize whenever you get a chance to finish .
For example when I completed my 1st draft I did not set a deadline but I made sure to at least write every day . It took one year to write but after completing it was a definite milestone that I felt good about. But even though I finished the first draft my goal to publish my novel was not yet accomplished and still isn’t but will 2022 be the year I finally publish this novel ? Only time will tell . Until then I will just have to work on my writing milestones to help me get to the publication.
